First Ottoman Siege of Thessaloniki (1383-1387)

A commission I did for Evan Schultheis (who wrote 'The Battle of the Catalaunian Fields, AD 451'), depicting the First Ottoman Siege of Thessaloniki.
Manning the walls we see the mix of soldiers that composed the very late romano-byzantine army during the Palaiologan era: Native soldiers clad in mail, an officer in full plate armor as in the western style, an Italian mercenary loading a crossbow. Another interesting thing is the machine two soldiers are manning, which is a springald. Essentially an anti-personal weapon made to shoot big bolts against enemy soldiers.
On the Ottoman side we see wicker screens and big shields covering the advancing infantry, which are shooting bows and carrying a ladder. In the background we also see a catapult.
Evan made a full thread in X/Twitter talking about the springald. You can read it here: https://twitter.com/EvanSchultheis/status/1743009195878711677
